GDES5015 – Business Card – Contextual Research

Last year we had a visit from a G.F. Smith representative who mentioned that business cards were still a very popular brand asset. I completely agree, they are an easy way to show your identity and get your brand out there. As we will be designing our own business cards this semester, I have researched into some styles that I like:

The card literally represents the brand:

I find these types of cards really creative and fun. They clearly show what the business is promoting and shows the passion they have for it. The added element of interactivity is also a sure way to make your business stick in peoples’ minds.

Quirky designs:

We all know that the typical business card is a rectangle but by changing this up slightly or, simply using a different material, brings a new level of interest. It also shows that you have an interest in your brand, you want it to stand out and be different.

Polished & Clean Designs:

Although we can often be pulled towards what we might deem more “exciting” templates (such as those shown above), sometimes the simple wins out. Clean and polished designs often catch our eye for their simplicity. They shout that the designer/ business knows exactly who they are and what they want to put across without having to have the gimmicks.

Ultimately, the design comes down to who you are as a business and what you want to represent. You want the holder to know exactly what sort of work you can produce just from picking up this simple card. I will keep this in mind when designing my own business card.
